Billboard Generation VII

My Bus Runs on Lemons and Flys by Kate, 1st grade, Grandview Elementary, Bloomington, IN

Announcing the Winners of Your Art Here’s 7th annual youth art billboard competition, Billboard Generation VII, beginning March 1st!

Your Art Here (YAH) is pleased to announce the winners of the seventh annual youth art billboard competition, Billboard Generation VII (BBG VII). In celebration of National Youth Art Month in March of 2009, Your Art Here is asking kids to make art on the topic “Sustainability: Living in Balance.”

Chosen artwork from grade through high school winners will be displayed on billboards in Bloomington and Indianapolis during March 2009. Selected pieces will be exhibited during the month of March as well (details forthcoming).

The Billboard Generation project provides kids the opportunity to express themselves to the community through visual dialogue. This year’ theme, “Sustainability: Living in Balance”is inspired by the increased attention, both media and civic, given to the spectrum of sustainability topics, from global warming (Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth) to the discussion of alternative and renewable energy (2008 presidential candidates’ new energy plans), from “green development” of our built environments (U.S. Green Building Council) to the protection of natural environments, ecosystems and farmlands (Environmental Protection Agency).

Through visual expression, kids will be able to explore sustainability issues that affect them at a personal and community level. The topic is meant to encourage reflection on their role and the role of the greater community in achieving a balance with our natural environment.

If I Were President by Daniel, St. Charles School, Bloomington, IN, March 2008

Announcing the Winners of Your Art Here’s 6th annual youth art billboard competition, Billboard Generation VI, beginning March 1st!

Your Art Here (YAH) is pleased to announce the winning entries of the sixth annual youth art billboard competition, Billboard Generation VI. In celebration of National Youth Art Month, YAH asked kids to make art on the topic “If I Were President…” Seven entries made by grade school through high school students will be on display on billboards in Bloomington and Indianapolis during the month of March.

The Billboard Generation project provides kids the opportunity to express themselves to the community through visual dialogue. This year’s theme, “If I were president …,” is inspired by the upcoming 2008 presidential election. We hope that this topic will encourage kids to understand the multi-dimensional roles and responsibilities of the presidency and how they can impact, if they were president, their community, their nation and nations abroad. Through visual expression, they will be able to explore current events and issues that affect them at a personal and community level. The topic is meant to encourage reflection on what qualities, characteristics, skills and experiences are critical in leading a large and diverse democratic nation. Lastly, this year’s theme will also instill at an early age the significance of voting for elected representatives and officials.

By providing public advertising spaces for youth art we hope to encourage thought on how to enrich our community through visual dialogue. Through this project we want to instill in kids the desire, knowledge, and confidence that will allow them to engage their community and world throughout their lives.

Billboard Generation V

Announcing the Winners of Your Art Here’s 5th annual youth art billboard competition, Billboard Generation V, beginning March 1st!

Your Art Here (YAH) is pleased to announce the winning artworks of the fifth annual youth art billboard competition, Billboard Generation V. In celebration of National Youth Art Month, YAH asked kids to make art on the topic “Be the Media: What Would You Say? ” Six artworks made by grade school through high school students will be on display starting March 1st on billboards in Bloomington and Indianapolis.

The Billboard Generation Project gives kids the opportunity to express themselves to the community through visual dialogue. This year’s topic was inspired not only by YAH’s own mission, but also the increasing ubiquity and diversity of media in our daily lives. Today’s media extends beyond the more traditional vehicles of communication such as newspapers, magazines, television, radio, etc. to include the Internet, video, electronic mail, blogs, podcasts, etc., all of which have generated an increased volume of media output and intake. Students from Bloomington and Indianapolis were encouraged to consider the affect of mass media on their everyday lives. They used this opportunity to “be the media” and realize the power of their own voice while considering the impact it can have on their community and the public-at-large.

By providing public advertising spaces for youth art we hope to encourage thought on how to enrich our community through visual dialogue. Through this project we want to instill in kids the desire, knowledge, and confidence that will allow them to engage their community and world throughout their lives.

Students from Bloomington and Indianapolis communicated their hopes, dreams, and questions about their future, imagining such things as career choices, what they will look like, and what it will mean to be true to themselves as grown-ups in the world.

The Billboard Generation Project gives kids the opportunity to express themselves to the community through visual dialogue. We believe that expressing unique opinions, and giving a voice to every individual’s ideas is a patriotic and civic duty. Students from the Bloomington and Indianapolis community communicated their thoughts and feeling about a wide variety of issues: the importance of expression, gender equality and equality for the handicapped, equality for all races and ethnicities, the alienation of youth in modern culture, the obesity epidemic, and the search for truth in American culture.

By providing public advertising spaces for youth art we hope to encourage thought on how to enrich our community through visual dialogue.
