Artwork Statement

I’m intrigued by the power of religion over all of humanity. How it’s used to bring us together and also to separate us. How people struggle with their own inner demons as it pertains to their religion. How it’s acceptable to dismiss certain parts of the scriptures while others are interpreted and used to judge others. My own inner struggles are the basis of my first works.

Massachusetts Ave. Billboard Project: Molly Stevenson

Through it All by Molly Stevenson

Your Art Here presents Through it All by artist Molly Stevenson for the Massachusetts Ave. Billboard Project. The billboard will be mounted thru August 2007.

Artwork Statement

This work, I believe reads to everyone in someway. My motivation for this work was a personal statement I wanted to make about love. I personally come from a solid parental home, and have watched my parents go through it all but most importantly they have gone trough it all together. While divorce is becoming increasingly common, I think it is important for us to look at those couples that stand together strong through their bond.

Artist Bio

Molly Stevenson was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. Now attending college at Indiana University where in May of 2007, she will be receiving her B.A. in studio art and art history as well as a minor in business. She will then be attending graduate school to receive her masters and certification in art education. Molly hopes to use her education to pursue a career in teaching and helping underprivileged children through art.

Massachusetts Ave. Billboard Project: Sydney Craig

Ghosts Know No Borders by Sydney Craig

Your Art Here presents Ghosts Know No Borders by artist Sydney Craig for the Massachusetts Ave. Billboard Project. The billboard will be mounted thru August 2007.

Artwork Statement

As a society, we are born into a system of language that structures our beliefs, our conventions, and our culture. Arbitrary symbols and sounds construct communication and perception, and at times it is difficult to unveil a reality when it is masked by language’s manipulative nature. The media, for example, bombards the public with these symbols and sounds in a dizzying display of scrolling names of the deceased as the death toll in Iraq is announced. This piece illustrates how an individual, a reality full of meanings and experiences, can be lost under a veil of anonymity as he or she becomes another name on a list, another statistic, another body.

Artist Bio

As a product of Midwestern America, Sydney has grown up at the mercy of the weather and indiscernible elevation changes. She was born in 1984 in Lafayette, IN, and soon followed her family and the plastic production trends to central Indiana, where the green pastures of rural Indiana tapered into manicured lawns and suburban lifestyles. Sydney is now a senior at Indiana University and will graduate in May 2008 with a BFA in printmaking and a BA in the History of Art with a concentration in Modern Art viewed through a lens of literary theory.

Massachusetts Ave. Billboard Project: Adam Courier

A Cage by Adam Courier

Your Art Here presents A Cage by artist Adam Courier for the Massachusetts Ave. Billboard Project. The billboard will be mounted thru July 2007.

Artwork Statement

we forget to look up.
we ignore what has been missing.
this is our cage.
look up.

A Cage could mean many things, but primarily it may be, for you, a statement about the world in which we’ve created around ourselves. All of us are tethered (even wirelessly) to the various networks and power grids humming and buzzing over our heads.  In all of our haste to do our jobs, accumulate our money, to “progress,” what is it that we’re sacrificing?  Are the things that we create in order to make us more free the very things that strip us of our freedom?  Enjoy your next power outage.

Adam Courier was born in Honolulu, HI in 1980.  He grew up in Indianapolis and went to school in Bloomington where he graduated from in 2002.  He currently works in film production in Hawaii, but is moving to Los Angeles in the fall of 2007.

2 Frogs, an Elephant, and the Magical Horseshoe by Adam Courier

Your Art Here presents 2 Frogs, an Elephant, and the Magical Horseshoe by artist Adam Courier for the Massachusetts Ave. Billboard Project. The billboard will be mounted thru July 2007.

Artwork Statement

2 Frogs, an Elephant, and the Magical Horseshoe could be an unwritten fairy tale.  There are stories to be told by looking in the slightly sad eyes of those frogs.  Why is the elephant leaving, slowly lumbering on?  What mystery is held in the horseshoe, and what are the frogs hoping for with its magic?

I loved the emotion in the frogs’ little porcelain figures, I loved the coincidences and events that had to take place to bring these random knick knacks to this ledge, their stage, above the kitchen sink.    The picture glows with the soft warm light and the colors of home.  Its a charm you only find in the oldest of things.
