YAH Fest
I would like to begin by thanking everyone who was involved with
YAH Fest. The volunteers, the bands, the local businesses, everyone
who came; you all helped to make it a lot of fun and a great success.
Thank you all. All told the total was an impressive $755. The
money raised from YAH Fest will go to fund billboards to display
kids art during National Youth Art Month in 2004.
Your Art Here would also like to thank the following persons,

Your Art Here has decided to change the final entry due date for
the Collect All Four T-shirt contest to correspond with the Adbusters
Media Foundation 7th annual Buy Nothing Day. That's right
folks, the day after Thanksgiving. This year BND falls on November
28. Check your inbox soon for the official YAH announcement!
Happy First Tuesday of November
If you're reading this on Tuesday then it's time to get your body
(and your friend's too) to the polls. Individual voters have the
most influence at the local level and incidentally, that's where
you feel the results most in the days after elections. Your Art
Here is a non-profit organization so won't (can't) tell you who
we are voting for (We can say that we believe that billboards
are a place for art, not election advertistements), but please,
do vote your conscience for your community and yourself.

recently and mentioned that they are interested in showing art
in their establishment. Michael's Uptown Cafe is located at 102
East Kirkwood Avenue, Bloomington, IN. 47401.
Amenities include: 1. Reception with free appetizers provided
by Michael's Uptown Cafe, 2. No commission taken for sales, and
3. They also take care of press!

for the first time. I have to honestly say that it changed my
life. And now, 5 years later, it's still powerful. Until next

We, the undersigned, are graphic designers, photographers and
students who have been brought up in a world in which the techniques
and apparatus of advertising have persistently been presented
to us as the most lucrative, effective and desirable means of
using our talents. We have been bombarded with publications devoted
to this belief, applauding the work of those who have flogged
their skill and imagination to sell such things as: Cat food,
stomach powders, detergent, hair restorer, striped toothpaste,
aftershave lotion, beforeshave lotion, slimming diets, fattening
diets, deodorants, fizzy water, cigarettes, roll-ons, pull-ons,
and slip-ons. By far the greatest time and effort of those working
in the advertising industry are wasted on these trivial purposes,
which contribute little or nothing to our national prosperity.
In common with an increasing number of the general public, we
have reached a saturation point at which the high pitched stream
of consumer selling is no more than sheer noise. We think that
there are other things more worth using our skill and experience
on. There are signs for streets and buildings, books and periodicals,
catalogues, instructional manuals, industrial photography, educational
aids, films, television features, scientific and industrial publications
and all the other media through which we promote our trade, our
education, our culture and our greater awareness of the world.
We do not advocate the abolition of high pressure consumer advertising:
this is not feasible. Nor do we want to take any of the fun out
of life. But we are proposing a reversal of priorities in favour
of the more useful and lasting forms of communication. We hope
that our society will tire of gimmick merchants, status salesmen
and hiddenpersuaders, and that the prior call on our skills will
be for worthwhile purposes. With this in mind, we propose to share
our experience and opinions, and to make them available to colleagues,
students and others who may be interested.
